KHJ: Inside Boss Radio arrived!

I immediately appreciate its actuality

style, letting major players

unfold the stories' different angles,

perspectives. I love this book!  I want

it to be Volume One of 25. Balanced out KHJ’s missing pieces for me.

Lots of people I know, knew, didn't know – all part of this tremendously inspired era.  I am re-inspired!

And I get to do something about it on my afternoon drive air shift at legendary KFRC.

Let there be no question about the central role played by Ron Jacobs in the turn around of KHJ.  In this classic business success story of
personalities, competition, performance, and impact, Ron takes the reader
into the halls of 5515 Melrose during the years he directed every on-air
detail at what quickly became the single most-imitated radio station in
North America.
The philosophy that led to KHJ's success that Ron Jacobs shares in

KHJ: Inside Boss Radio is of immeasurable value to any student serious about pursuing a media career.  It is equally valuable to contemporary radio managers who may have forgotten how truly excellent radio was--and still can be.

I received the book this morning and just finished it.  Wow!  What a trip down memory lane.  It’s so much fun to read about and remember those exciting times on Melrose Avenue.  One thing kept clobbering me over the head all day.

KHJ: Inside Boss Radio is a MUST-READ for any current or future programmer.  The book is not just a history of a legendary radio station.  It’s a HOW-TO book about programming and promoting any station to greatness.  The lessons – all the Bill Drake/Ron Jacobs BASICS – are here, first hand.  This is how we did it.

I literally could not put this book down until I had read it from cover to cover, including the covers. This is perhaps the most accurate account of tactical battle genius I have ever seen, in or out of radio wars. Jacobs is, of course marvelous. The FCC should require that every head of every radio company study KHJ: Inside Boss Radio.  The coaching skills of this then twentysomething kid puts them all to shame, and his product showed it. When Drake's strategy mixed with Jacob's tactical skills, and the topnotch talent they collectively knew and hired, the outcome was stupendous.

In 1965 KHJ revolutionized Top 40 radio by introducing "Boss Radio" to Los Angeles. The blending of the right personalities within a format that emphasized more music and zany promotions created a shockwave that was soon felt in other major cities like New York, where RKO-owned stations were also floundering in the ratings wars. For the first time, Jacobs' book provides a revealing insider's amalgam of facts and figures behind KHJ's swift takeover of the L.A. market, with fresh recollections from the DJ, news, engineering, sales and promotion staffers as well as original memos from Jacobs to the "Boss Jocks," equally critical as well as informative  Also: Breakdowns of hourly clocks, emphasizing all the vital elements which produced the station's constantly, consistently high-energy level.

KHJ: Inside Boss Radio is the definitive look at what made KHJ one of the most successful, distinctive-sounding radio stations in the nation.
